CMSD school choice: Feb. 27 deadline shapes 2026–2027 plans

Families in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District who needed to pick a school for the 2026–2027 year faced a key deadline at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27. The district says choices made before that cutoff help families secure top preferences, while later submissions can be more limited once schools hit capacity and staffing plans are set.

The decision window mattered most for current preschoolers entering kindergarten, eighth graders heading to ninth grade, and families affected by the Building Brighter Futures consolidation plan.

Public safety: Westlake traffic stop leads to gun and fentanyl-related charges

In a case that began with an equipment-violation stop, Westlake police report arresting a Cleveland man in his 30s after officers said they found a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat. Police said additional narcotics were discovered during booking, including fentanyl pills, along with other drugs.

While the stop happened earlier in February, the newly released details add to the region’s day-to-day focus on illegal guns and the ongoing fentanyl threat.

Weekend and community notes

Last call for the Cleveland Auto Show (and a caffeine-filled Saturday)

If you’re looking for something easy to do without over-planning, the Cleveland Auto Show runs through Sunday, March 1 at the I-X Center. Saturday also brought the Cleveland Coffee Festival to the West Side, a one-day event focused on tastings and coffee education.

Family-friendly picks posted for Feb. 28

A local events roundup for Saturday highlighted kid-forward options across Greater Cleveland, including activities tied to theater and nature programming, plus seasonal outings like maple sugaring. For many families, it’s the kind of list that makes a winter weekend feel a lot more manageable.
