A construction worker was killed in a hit-and-run in a work zone on westbound I-70 near the State Route 315 interchange early Saturday. Police said a maroon Toyota sedan struck a worker and a generator, then sped off. Drivers were directed to use a detour route while investigators asked the public for help identifying the vehicle and the person behind the wheel.
Teen charged after student shot near Martin Luther King Branch Library
A 19-year-old faces charges after a student was shot during an argument in the parking lot of the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Martin Luther King Branch on East Long Street. Police said the victim was taken to the hospital and later upgraded to stable condition and expected to survive. Court records and school officials indicated added support and security in the area as the case moves forward.
Lawsuit alleges missed warnings before a 2024 fatal shooting
The family of Marchelle Freeman filed a wrongful death lawsuit that names Columbus police officers and alleges repeated warnings and reported threats were not acted on before Freeman was fatally shot in 2024. The complaint describes multiple police responses earlier the same day and argues steps could have been taken to separate the parties and remove a firearm. Mayor proposes more funding for non-police crisis response
City leaders also highlighted a proposed operating-budget increase for alternative crisis response, aimed at sending clinicians or other non-uniformed professionals to certain 911 calls involving mental health or addiction crises when there is no reported threat of physical harm. City council still must approve the 2026 budget.
