Reno Daily Local Headlines: Downtown Arch Talk, 395 Lane Shifts, and Roadwork Dates
Reno, NV โ March 4, 2026 โ Downtown arch upgrades, new 395 lane shifts, wildfire outlook and two roadwork closures could affect commutes this month.
Reno is rolling into midweek with a mix of civic planning, big-road construction updates, and a few reminders that springtime in the high desert can turn quickly from wet to windy.
Downtown: Reno Arch modernization and a wider plan
City leaders reviewed a proposed modernization of the iconic Reno Arch, including a shift to a remote-controlled LED system and a faux-neon approach meant to reduce wear on aging wiring and cut down on frequent hands-on bulb changes. The discussion also revisited progress on the long-running Downtown Action Plan, with staff outlining what has moved forward and what remains slowed or stalled.
Commuter heads-up: U.S. 395 North Valleys work
Drivers in the North Valleys should expect ongoing lane reductions and periodic ramp changes as freeway sections and bridges are rebuilt. Current plans call for reduced lanes through key stretches, lower speeds through work zones, and overnight closures that can shift from day to day. Transportation officials say the rebuild is aimed at adding capacity, improving merging, and boosting safety along one of Renoโs busiest corridors.
Neighborhood roadwork: Moana Lane and West Fourth Street
On the city street side, eastbound Moana Lane is set for a multi-week closure between Baker Lane and South Virginia Street starting March 16, with detours posted while concrete repairs are completed. Separately, a safety-focused rebuild is underway on West Fourth Street between McCarran Boulevard and Vine Street. That project includes pavement rehab, a multi-use path, and two new roundabouts, with construction expected to continue into the fall.
Wildfire season watch
Local fire officials say winterโs rain-heavy pattern at lower elevations could influence fuels later this year, including the potential for more cheatgrass growth heading into early summer. The message now: keep an eye on defensible space work and be ready for an earlier-than-usual shift into fire-prep mode if warm, dry weather arrives quickly.
What to watch
- March 16: Moana Lane eastbound closure begins.
- Weeknights: changing lane and ramp restrictions on U.S. 395 in the North Valleys.
- Through fall: West Fourth Street safety construction and detours.
