DUI Checkpoint, School Closure Delay and Fatal Crash Lead San Jose Headlines
San Jose, CA – March 8, 2026 – A DUI checkpoint, a fatal pedestrian crash and delayed school closure decisions top this weekend’s local headlines.
It has been a busy stretch of news in San Jose, with public safety, schools and development plans all making headlines over the past few days.
DUI Checkpoint Conducted Friday Night
San Jose police set up a DUI checkpoint Friday night, March 6, at an undisclosed location in the city. Officers screened drivers from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. as part of an ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving.
Police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on crash data tied to alcohol and drug use. Officials also reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol and can include marijuana and certain medications.
Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Hit-And-Run
A 63-year-old San Jose woman was killed early Friday in a hit-and-run crash near the Interstate 680 and Alum Rock Avenue off-ramp.
Authorities say the collision happened in the early morning hours of March 6. The driver involved reportedly fled the scene. The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to identify the suspect vehicle and driver.
Decision on School Closures Delayed
A decision on potential school closures within the San Jose Unified School District has been postponed, giving families and staff more time to weigh in.
District officials have been reviewing campuses amid declining enrollment, which has dropped significantly over the past several years. A committee meeting is scheduled for March 10 at the district office on Lenzen Avenue as discussions continue.
Office Building Could Become High School
In development news, a proposal would convert a long-vacant office building on Race Street into a private high school campus serving up to 800 students.
The plan calls for renovating the existing three-story building into classrooms and labs, along with constructing a new gym. The project reflects a broader trend of repurposing empty office space for new community uses.
