Minneapolis is digging out after a powerful mid-March winter storm swept through the Upper Midwest, prompting a statewide peacetime emergency and major travel disruptions.

Storm Triggers Emergency Declaration

Minnesota declared a peacetime emergency on March 13 as forecasts called for up to 12 to 18 inches of snow in the Twin Cities. The National Guard was authorized to assist with preparedness efforts, and state officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

By March 14, the Minnesota State Patrol reported more than 100 crashes statewide, including injury incidents and at least one fatality. Hundreds of flights were canceled at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as heavy snow and strong winds intensified.

Forecasters say the system remains active through March 16, with additional snow and gusty conditions possible before a gradual cooldown later this week.

City Events Continue Despite Weather

Even with the storm, several events moved forward over the weekend. The Food and Wine Experience returned to Target Field on Sunday, drawing attendees downtown for tastings and culinary showcases.

On Monday, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board wrapped up its winter Noon Nature Stroll series at Wirth Lake Beach. The lunchtime walks, held weekly since early January, encouraged residents to stay active outdoors despite cold temperatures.

Officials continue to advise caution on neighborhood streets, where plowing operations are ongoing. Residents are reminded to check snow emergency rules, monitor flight statuses before heading to the airport, and allow extra time for commutes.
