Record Warmth, Fire Danger Return to South Plains
Lubbock, TX – March 30, 2026 – Heat surges back with record warmth, elevated fire danger and gusty winds across the South Plains this week.
Lubbock is heading into the final days of March with unseasonably hot temperatures and elevated fire danger across the South Plains.
Near-Record Heat Builds
After a brief cooldown late last week, temperatures quickly rebounded over the weekend. Sunday’s high reached the mid-80s, running well above average for late March. Forecasters say this month is on track to rank among the warmest Marches on record for Lubbock.
Highs are expected to climb into the upper 80s and low 90s again Monday, with warm and dry air settling over the region. Overnight lows are also staying mild, dropping only into the 50s.
Elevated Fire Weather Conditions
With the heat comes concern about fire danger. Gusty winds combined with dry air are creating elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions, especially during the afternoon hours. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and to use caution with equipment that could spark a fire.
Even routine activities such as towing trailers with loose chains or parking vehicles on dry grass can pose risks in these conditions. The combination of wind and low humidity allows fires to spread quickly across open land.
Storm Chances Midweek
Looking ahead, a cold front and dryline are expected to approach the region by Tuesday. While much of the area will remain dry, there is a slight chance of isolated showers or storms if conditions align. Any rainfall would be welcome, but coverage is expected to be limited.
For now, the primary concerns remain heat, wind and fire safety. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, secure loose outdoor items and monitor local forecasts for updates as conditions evolve.
