Red Bank Super Foodtown closes after 50 years, and Broad Street watch begins

Red Bank’s Super Foodtown at 362 Broad Street closed on or about May 23 after roughly 50 years in business, ending a long run as a familiar grocery stop for residents and nearby shoppers.

The closure is more than a store sign coming down. It leaves Red Bank without one of its most familiar grocery anchors and raises a practical question for workers, customers and neighbors who built weekly routines around the Broad Street location.

Red Bank Green reported that workers were clearing shelves as the shutdown took hold, and Patch confirmed the closing date and address. In its statement, the company said the Red Bank store had become harder to keep competitive as the supermarket business changed.

The property’s next chapter is still a reported plan, not a finished deal. Red Bank Green said the Atlantic Club told members it intended to move its fitness club and spa to the Foodtown site, and also reported that the club was under contract to buy the property but that the sale had not been finalized.

That distinction matters for Red Bank. A reported move is not the same as an approved redevelopment, and there is no public construction timeline to watch yet. For now, shoppers have one less nearby grocery option, workers face uncertainty tied to the closure, and a prominent Broad Street parcel has become one of the borough’s closest near-term property-watch stories.
