What to Expect From NDOT’s Loup River South Bridges Update at Columbus City Council
Columbus NE – City Council meets July 20 for an NDOT update on the Loup River South Bridges project, with phased traffic and Pawnee Park access changes through 2027.
Columbus NE commuters and residents have a chance to hear current status and phasing details at the July 20, 2026 Columbus City Council meeting. On the agenda, the city lists an update on the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Loup River South Bridges project, tied to the US-30/US-81 crossing near the southern edge of Columbus.
Where the work is and why it affects daily driving
NDOT’s project is centered on the US-30/US-81 bridge crossing over the Loup River, with nearby impacts around the Pawnee Park area. NDOT’s fact sheet describes improvements that will replace the southbound Columbus Loup River Bridge, repair the northbound bridge deck, and replace the southbound part of the Pawnee Park Drive underpass.
Because the work is planned in phases, residents should expect staged changes to bridge operations and local access—rather than one single “all-at-once” shift.
What Columbus City Council is set to review on July 20
The regular City Council agenda includes an “Update on Nebraska Department of Transportation Loup River South Bridges project” as part of the meeting’s reports of city offices.
This is an update/status item on the agenda. The takeaway for residents is to listen for current phase progression and any “what changes next” details NDOT or city staff provide—especially as it relates to commutes and Pawnee Park access.
NDOT’s timeline (and the phasing window)
NDOT’s fact sheet says the work will begin in spring 2025 and be anticipated to be complete in fall 2027, weather permitting. It also lays out three construction phases:
- Phase 1: Spring – Summer 2025
- Phase 2: Summer 2025 – Summer 2027
- Phase 3: Summer – Fall 2027
Traffic and access guidance residents should plan around
NDOT’s fact sheet includes specific commute and access expectations for the US-30/US-81 corridor and for the Pawnee Park area. Two details are especially important for planning:
- US-30/US-81 traffic: NDOT states that traffic on US-30/US-81 will not be detoured. The fact sheet also describes maintaining one lane of traffic in each direction on designated existing/new lanes depending on the phase.
- Pawnee Park vehicular access: NDOT says Pawnee Park Drive will be closed to traffic, with a detour route going east on 8th Street to 26th Avenue, then south on 26th Avenue to Pawnee Park Drive. NDOT indicates this detour is maintained through all phases of construction.
Pedestrian access is also addressed. NDOT says the Pawnee Park Trail treatment changes during the project: in some phases, the trail remains open with access maintained via existing sidewalk and the northbound bridge walkway; in other phases, pedestrian traffic is detoured onto Pawnee Park Drive through the newly constructed underpass, with the trail closed along portions of the north bank under the bridges.
If your route, commute, or recreational plans regularly include the Pawnee Park/Loup River area, the practical point is to treat the project as multi-year with changing access details by phase—not a single fixed detour.
What to watch for during the July 20 update
During the city’s NDOT project update, the most useful questions residents can keep in mind are the ones that translate directly to daily life: Where is the project in the phase schedule right now? What local access changes are expected next for the Pawnee Park Drive detour and the Pawnee Park Trail? And are there any near-term shifts to construction timing that commuters should know about as work continues toward fall 2027?
Construction phasing can change due to contractor progress and weather, so NDOT and city guidance referenced in public updates will be the best source for the latest “what’s open and what’s not” information.
