Minnesota’s late filing window July 14–28: Kasson & KM board races
Kasson MN – Minnesota’s late local candidate filing period runs July 14–28, 2026. Here’s what it means for Kasson mayor and KM school board races.
Minnesota’s “late” local candidate filing period is open now. For jurisdictions without primaries, candidates can file affidavits Tuesday, July 14 through Tuesday, July 28, 2026—with the filing period closing at 5:00 p.m.
On the last day, the Secretary of State’s elections calendar says municipal clerks with late filings must be open from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.—so plan ahead if you’re considering running.
What the “late” filing window is (and who it applies to)
The Minnesota Secretary of State’s candidate filing page explains that most local offices without primaries use the July 14–July 28 window. It also cautions voters and candidates to contact the local clerk to confirm the correct filing period for their municipality or school district.
What’s on the ballot in Kasson city government
A local report says Kasson residents will vote for:
- Mayor (two-year term): Dan Eggler
- City Council (two seats, four-year terms): Ryan Christensen and Paul Johnson
That same report says affidavits of candidacy must be filed at Kasson City Hall with City Clerk Linda Rappe.
What’s on the ballot in Kasson–Mantorville schools
The Kasson-Mantorville School District has three school board seats up for re-election. The local report lists:
- Kate Ryan (current chair) — confirmed she will not run again
- Mark Torkelson and Patrick Madery — did not respond to a re-election confirmation email at the time of publication
For filing logistics, the report says affidavits must be turned into the Kasson-Mantorville district office.
Basic candidate requirements (what you typically have to bring)
Local reporting notes the filing requirements are the same for candidates in this cycle:
- Must be eligible to vote in Minnesota
- Must not have filed for another office in the upcoming primary or general election
- Must be 21 years old or more upon assuming office
- Must maintain residency in the city or district for at least 30 days before the general election
- Must pay a $2 filing fee at the time of filing
There’s also a statewide process change for 2026: the Minnesota Secretary of State says this will be the first statewide candidate filing period where state and local candidates are required to show a photo ID and provide proof of residence to the filing officer when submitting their affidavit, along with updated guidance on keeping a residence address private.
How to check who’s actually filed before the deadline
The Secretary of State’s candidate finder is designed to help you track filings during the window, and it notes that candidates who withdraw are removed from the site.
Still, because plans can change until the filing deadline, residents who are watching Kasson or Kasson–Mantorville should confirm the latest status—and filing office hours and submission requirements—directly with the relevant local clerk or district office before July 28.
