Carbondale wildfire model will identify potential mitigation priorities
Carbondale residents can report home and property features for a wildfire-spread model intended to guide future mitigation and evacuation planning.
Carbondale residents are being asked to provide basic information about their homes and yards as researchers build a neighborhood-level model of how wildfire could move through the community.
The project involves the Town of Carbondale, Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District, the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley and wildfire researchers led by Dr. Hussam Mahmoud of Vanderbilt University. The Wildfire Collaborative lists Carbondale data collection for February-May 2026, with results anticipated in winter 2026.
No Carbondale property rankings, neighborhood findings or final mitigation priorities have been released.
How the wildfire model works
The model is designed to examine more than whether an individual home might ignite. It looks at how fire could spread through a neighborhood from one structure or fuel source to another.
The Wildfire Collaborative describes the approach as a graph-based model. Buildings, trees and other fuel patches are treated as connected points in a network, with possible fire pathways involving convection, radiant heat and ember spotting. Researchers use those connections to simulate fire progression, estimate relative structure vulnerability and identify areas where fire could spread most readily.
The intended use is to help communities decide where limited mitigation resources may have the greatest effect. Possible applications include targeted vegetation management, home hardening, evacuation planning and pre-incident preparation. Those are potential uses of the analysis, not adopted Carbondale policies or completed mitigation projects.
What residents are being asked to report
The Carbondale Wildfire Resiliency Home Data Collector says it takes about five minutes to complete and asks for characteristics that are generally visible from the street or property. Categories include roof material, siding, windows, gutters, eaves, vents, decks, patios, fences and how fences connect to homes.
Residents are also asked about vegetation within the first 5 feet of the home and in the next 6 to 30 feet, propane tanks, firewood and other flammable items, outbuildings such as sheds or detached garages, and whether the house number is easy to see from the street.
The form allows residents to select โI donโt knowโ when they are unsure. It also asks for an address and whether a property is an empty lot, apartment or condominium building, or part of a homeowners association.
This is not a home inspection
The home-data survey says the information will be used for community wildfire-risk modeling and planning. It is not presented as an inspection, code-enforcement process or judgment about a homeownerโs choices.
That distinction matters because a model result could show how a structure fits into a broader fire-spread pathway, not that a homeowner caused a risk or will be ordered to make changes. Any future mitigation recommendations would still require separate decisions, funding and implementation steps.
Why the timing matters
The Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection Districtโs July 8 board packet describes an active wildfire season, including daily initial-attack patrols in the north and south ends of the district, responses to regional fires and ongoing mitigation work. The packet reports 51 wildfire mitigation assessments in June.
That activity provides current preparedness context, but it does not establish the results of Carbondaleโs modeling project. The project page lists the results as anticipated in winter 2026. Residents should not assume that any property or neighborhood has already been assigned an official mitigation priority.
Residents who want to participate can review the Carbondale Wildfire Resiliency Home Data Collector and provide the information they know. The eventual Carbondale results will be the key document to watch for information about fire-spread pathways, potential mitigation options and how officials may use the analysis in future planning.
