Jacksonville Gas Falls to $3.849 as Diesel Holds Above $5.40

Regular gasoline prices eased in the Jacksonville metro area on Friday, July 31, but diesel remained above $5.40 per gallon and continued to move differently from gasoline.

AAA’s July 31 price check listed Jacksonville’s average regular gasoline price at $3.849 per gallon and diesel at $5.401 per gallon. The averages cover the metro market, so prices at individual Jacksonville-area stations may be higher or lower.

Regular gas is lower than Thursday and last week

Regular gasoline fell 2.1 cents from Thursday’s $3.870 average. It was also 11.3 cents below the $3.962 average listed one week earlier.

The latest gasoline average was still higher than the $3.767 recorded one month earlier and well above the $2.973 average from the same point last year. Friday’s short-term decline has not erased the larger increase Jacksonville drivers have seen over longer comparison periods.

Diesel dipped overnight but rose week over week

Diesel declined 1.8 cents from Thursday’s $5.419 average. However, Friday’s $5.401 price was 9.1 cents higher than the $5.310 average from one week earlier.

Diesel also remained above its month-earlier average of $4.559 and its year-earlier average of $3.624. The separate movements matter because a lower daily price does not necessarily mean diesel costs are easing overall.

Diesel costs about $1.55 more per gallon

At Friday’s averages, diesel cost approximately $1.552 more per gallon than regular gasoline. That gap can matter more for diesel-dependent drivers and businesses than the day-to-day gasoline change alone.

Commuters using regular gasoline may see some relief if the lower trend continues. Diesel users—including delivery operators, contractors, service businesses, restaurants with delivery vehicles and other commercial fleets—face a higher per-gallon fuel expense when vehicles are refueled. The difference can add to operating costs, especially for vehicles that travel long distances or carry heavy loads.

The fuel-price gap alone amounts to about $15.52 on a 10-gallon diesel fill-up, $31.04 on 20 gallons and $77.60 on 50 gallons, compared with buying the same volume of regular gasoline at the Jacksonville average. Those are price comparisons, not estimates of a particular business’s total cost.

Broader fuel-market context

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest weekly data, released July 28, showed the Lower Atlantic average at $3.867 for regular gasoline and $5.255 for on-highway diesel on July 27. Both regional prices were higher than the prior week, providing broader context for Jacksonville’s elevated fuel costs.
