Newton-Area Gas and Diesel Both Rise From Last Week
AAA’s July 31 check puts Newton-area regular gas at $4.168 and diesel at $5.529, with both higher than a week earlier but above month-ago levels.
Regular gasoline in the Cambridge-Newton-Framingham metro area averaged $4.168 per gallon in AAA’s July 31, 2026, price check. The metro figure, which includes Newton, was unchanged from the previous day but 2.9 cents higher than a week earlier. It was also 19.8 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.078 higher than a year earlier.
The AAA figures cover the metro area rather than an average calculated from every station inside Newton. Individual pumps can be higher or lower depending on location, competition and the timing of their latest price change.
Diesel also moved higher
Diesel averaged $5.529 per gallon in the same AAA metro table. That was 1.5 cents higher than the previous day, 11 cents higher than a week earlier, 25.3 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.639 higher than a year earlier.
Diesel’s daily and weekly increases matter especially for contractors, landscapers, delivery operators, property-service companies and other commercial users who depend on heavier vehicles. Fuel costs can affect the expense of each route, service call or job-site visit, although the price data does not show whether any particular business has changed its behavior.
Statewide context
The U.S. Energy Information Administration listed Massachusetts regular gasoline at $4.084 per gallon for the week of July 27. The figure was released July 28 and represents a statewide weekly estimate, not a Newton-specific or metro daily average.
The AAA Cambridge-Newton-Framingham regular-gas average was 8.4 cents higher than the EIA statewide figure. The difference reflects the comparison of a daily metro measure with a weekly statewide estimate and is another reason drivers should check nearby stations rather than treat an average as a guaranteed pump price.
What the movement could mean locally
For commuters and households, the weekly increase in regular gas can add to the cost of repeated trips, school runs and weekend travel. Restaurants and service businesses may also watch fuel expenses when employees, suppliers or delivery vehicles travel more miles.
