Exeter Township emergency-services center receives $1.5 million grant

Exeter Township’s planned emergency-services center received a $1.5 million Pennsylvania grant announced July 17, 2026, moving the project closer to construction while its start date and final cost remain unresolved.

The Pennsylvania House announcement identifies the Exeter Township Volunteer Fire Department as the recipient of the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program award. The planned facility would be built at 70 Gibraltar Road, near the Gibraltar Road and DeMoss Road intersection, in Berks County.

A centralized emergency-services facility

The project is intended to bring the fire department, EMS, fire marshal and emergency management operations together at one location. The department’s project page says the planned building would replace its reliance on two leased fire-station locations in Reiffton and Stonersville.

Planned features include apparatus bays and associated storage, kitchen and dining areas, showers and bathrooms, sleeping quarters, training and administrative space, and other operational areas. The Pennsylvania House announcement describes the project as a one- to two-story building on a currently vacant site.

The department reports that it responded to a record 1,599 calls in 2025. That is a department-reported figure rather than an independently audited statistic, but it provides context for the department’s stated need for a larger, centralized facility.

Planning records show the project’s scale

A Berks County planning report identifies the proposed Emergency Service Facility as a public project in Exeter Township at the northwestern side of the Gibraltar Road and DeMoss Road intersection. The report lists approximately 29,960 square feet of proposed space on 11.28 acres.

The project has advanced through several planning and permitting steps. Exeter Township supervisors approved preliminary and final land-development plans on March 23, 2026, and approved a sewer-planning module on April 13. The department’s project page records approval of the NPDES permit on June 8, 2026.

The project page also says members of the new-building committee met with the design team on June 20 to review and select finishes for the emergency-services center. Those steps show continued project development, but they do not establish that construction has begun.

What remains unclear

The grant announcement does not establish that the facility is fully funded, that the existing leased stations have closed, or that construction is ready to begin immediately. The approved sources do not provide a construction start date, opening date or final total project cost.

For residents, the next useful updates will likely involve additional approvals, financing details, bidding and a construction schedule. Until those details are released, the RACP award should be viewed as an important funding commitment for the planned center, not as confirmation that work is underway.
