Mentor Residents Face New NOPEC Electric-Rate Choices Beginning in September

Eligible Mentor residents whose electric supply comes through NOPEC aggregation will have three published electric-supply rate choices beginning with September 2026 meter reads, according to a July 23 notice from the City of Mentor.

The options include a standard seasonal rate and two fixed-term plans. The notice applies to eligible NOPEC aggregation customers in the city of Mentor, not necessarily every electric customer in Mentor. NOPEC’s published rate page lists these options for customers in the Ohio Edison and The Illuminating Company territories.

Three supply-rate options

• Standard program: 10.399 cents per kilowatt-hour. NOPEC describes this as a seasonal rate based on market conditions. It is valid from the September 2026 meter read through the June 2027 meter read.
• 12-month fixed term: 10.299 cents per kilowatt-hour. Customers who select it lock in that supply rate for 12 months beginning with their September 2026 meter read.
• 24-month fixed term: 10.599 cents per kilowatt-hour. Customers who select it lock in that supply rate for 24 months beginning with their September 2026 meter read.

The 12-month option is 0.100 cents per kilowatt-hour below the standard rate. The 24-month option is 0.200 cents above it. The standard program is not a fixed rate; NOPEC says its price varies with wholesale market conditions.

Who the notice affects

NOPEC lists Mentor, Ohio, as an electric and gas member community since 2000. Its community map separately lists Mentor-on-the-Lake, also as an electric and gas member community. This article concerns the city of Mentor, not the neighboring municipality of Mentor-on-the-Lake.

Eligibility and existing supplier status matter. NOPEC says eligible residents in member communities are automatically enrolled in its aggregation program, while customers using another supplier can call NOPEC to ask about enrollment. Customers should check their current electric bill before assuming that the notice applies to their account.

The rates cover only part of the bill

These figures are supply, or generation, rates. They do not represent the total electric bill. Distribution and transmission charges are determined by the local electric utility and remain separate from the supplier offer.

As a result, the lowest listed supply rate does not automatically guarantee the lowest total bill. Usage, utility charges, contract terms, early-termination fees or other supplier charges can affect the final amount.

How Mentor customers can compare

Residents should review their latest electric bill, identify the utility serving the account and find the utility’s current Price to Compare. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio’s Apples to Apples comparison resource advises customers to compare supplier offers with that figure.

The comparison tool is organized by utility territory. Customers should select the territory shown on their bill rather than rely on a rate displayed for a different utility. PUCO says the offers shown in the tool apply to the generation portion of the bill, while distribution and transmission rates are determined by the local utility.

Before making a selection, customers should confirm the current rate and terms on NOPEC’s live pricing page because pricing or availability could change before September. Customers who want a fixed-term option or have questions can contact NOPEC’s customer-care center at 855-667-3201. The City of Mentor says the center is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
