VTA plans San Jose light-rail shutdown and bus bridge for Aug. 8-9 repairs
San Jose light-rail riders should expect a planned weekend service disruption Aug. 8-9 while the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority carries out emergency rail repairs on San Carlos Street between First and Second streets.
VTA says the work is expected to run 24/7 from Saturday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 9, weather, schedule and site conditions permitting. The agency says the timing may change.
Five San Jose stations will close
The affected rail segment runs between Japantown/Ayer and Convention Center. VTA plans to close these five stations during the work:
- Convention Center
- Paseo de San Antonio
- Santa Clara
- St. James
- Japantown/Ayer
The disruption affects both the Blue Line and Green Line. VTA’s service alert lists modified service from 12:00 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9.
How the bus bridge will work
A replacement bus bridge will connect Children’s Discovery Museum and Civic Center, allowing riders to bypass the closed rail segment.
Riders traveling toward downtown will transfer from light rail to a bus at Children’s Discovery Museum, ride to Civic Center, and transfer back to light rail. Riders traveling in the opposite direction will reverse that process.
The planned interruption does not shut down the entire light-rail system. It affects the segment between Japantown/Ayer and Convention Center, with buses connecting the two operating rail points.
Allow extra travel time
VTA advises passengers to allow extra time because the bus transfer may add time to weekend trips. Blue and Green line riders traveling through downtown San Jose should check VTA service alerts before leaving.
The agency’s published rehabilitation notice includes transfer schedules for the affected weekend, but riders should confirm the latest information because weather, construction conditions or schedule changes could alter the plan.
People traveling near San Carlos Street between First and Second streets should also watch for any posted signs, barricades, cones or other traffic controls associated with the work zone.
