Raleigh to Lift Water Restrictions Monday After Falls Lake Rebounds

Raleigh will lift its Stage 1 water restrictions Monday, Aug. 3, after recent rainfall improved conditions at Falls Lake and the city’s secondary reservoirs.

The change means residents can return to normal watering rules when the restrictions end. The city is still asking people to use water efficiently because Falls Lake is at 84% full—not full capacity—and dry conditions remain.

Restrictions end Monday

The City of Raleigh announced the decision July 29. Stage 1 restrictions had been in place since April, when reservoir conditions led the city to limit outdoor water use.

According to the city, Falls Lake has recovered to 84% full, and recent rain also improved secondary reservoirs. Those conditions led officials to determine that Stage 1 restrictions could be lifted effective Monday, Aug. 3, 2026.

What changes for residents

Once the change takes effect, Raleigh residents may return to the city’s normal watering rules rather than following the temporary Stage 1 restrictions.

The policy change does not mean water supplies have completely returned to normal. Falls Lake remains below full capacity, and the city continues to encourage conservation and efficient water use.

Conservation guidance remains

Raleigh’s continued conservation request reflects the difference between ending a temporary restriction level and declaring that reservoir conditions are fully restored. The city is lifting Stage 1 rules based on improved conditions, but officials are not describing Falls Lake as full.
