Toyota, Lexus and Subaru EV Recall Notices Begin Mailing Monday
Owners of certain 2026 Toyota, Lexus and Subaru electric vehicles should check their vehicles for an open recall before waiting for a letter expected to begin mailing Monday, August 3, 2026.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists the safety recall as campaign 26V393. Its June 24, 2026, acknowledgment covers 20,991 battery-electric vehicles in the United States and warns that a software fault could cause an unexpected loss of drive power.
Which electric vehicles are affected?
The recall covers certain vehicles from three model lines: the 2026 Toyota bZ, the 2026 Lexus RZ and the 2026 Subaru Solterra.
Model and model-year information alone does not confirm that a particular vehicle is included. Owners should check the vehicle identification number, or VIN, or use a license-plate search through the NHTSA recall lookup.
Why the recall matters
NHTSA says the electronic control unit that manages the vehicle’s high-voltage battery may experience a fault. That fault could result in a loss of drive power while the vehicle is being driven.
The agency says an unexpected loss of drive power increases crash risk. The recall identifies a potential defect; it does not mean that every vehicle covered by the campaign will lose power.
Toyota’s June 18 announcement described a related battery-control software problem for certain Toyota bZ and Lexus RZ vehicles in North America. Toyota said the electric drive system could shut down and that dealers would install a free software update.
What owners should do
Check the vehicle now rather than waiting for a mailed notice. The NHTSA lookup can show whether a specific vehicle has an unrepaired recall when searched by VIN or license plate. NHTSA notes that recently announced recalls may not yet have every affected VIN in its system, so owners should check again if the vehicle is not initially listed.
If the vehicle is included in campaign 26V393, contact the appropriate manufacturer or an authorized dealer to schedule the repair. Dealers will update the battery ECU software at no charge.
Owners whose vehicle has already experienced an unexpected loss of drive power should contact the manufacturer or dealer for guidance before continuing to drive it. Keep NHTSA campaign number 26V393 available when making the call.
When will notices arrive?
NHTSA says owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning August 3, 2026. That is the expected mailing date, not a guarantee that every owner will receive a letter that day. Delivery timing may vary.
The federal record lists Toyota recall numbers 26LA07 and 26TA11 and Subaru recall number WRG26. Toyota’s June 18 announcement covered certain Toyota bZ and Lexus RZ vehicles in North America and cited approximately 16,200 vehicles, with notification expected by mid-August. That estimate should not be combined with NHTSA’s broader 20,991-vehicle U.S. count, which includes Subaru Solterra vehicles.
What remains unclear
NHTSA’s public acknowledgment establishes the affected vehicle lines, the potential battery-ECU fault, the possible crash risk, the free software remedy and the expected mailing date. It does not provide a public total for incidents in the recall record used for this article.
Owners should verify their own vehicle through the recall lookup and arrange the free update if the VIN or license plate shows an unrepaired recall. A model-year match by itself is not enough to establish that a vehicle is affected.
