Pennsylvania school districts have five days to seek a share of $100 million facilities grant program

Pennsylvania public school districts and area career and technical schools have five calendar days remaining, including Sunday, August 2, to apply for grants aimed at repairing and improving school buildings.

The Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program is accepting applications through August 7, 2026. Grants may reach $5 million per eligible improvement project, but submitting an application does not guarantee an award.

Who can apply

The program is open to Pennsylvania public school districts and area career and technical schools. The Commonwealth Financing Authority administers the grants through the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

The application window opened July 27, 2026, after the state extended the period for submissions. The Pennsylvania House grant memo says there will not be another funding round for the program during fiscal year 2026-27.

What projects may qualify

Legislative program guidance identifies several potential facility uses, including:

Roof repair or replacement
Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment
Plumbing systems
Window repair or replacement
Health and safety upgrades
Accessibility improvements

Those categories describe the types of improvements identified in the guidance. Applicants still must follow the applicable Commonwealth Financing Authority program rules when preparing their requests.

How the grant limits work

School entities may submit more than one application, according to the House grant memo. However, no school entity may receive more than 20% of the total funding available, and an individual request may not exceed $5 million per eligible project.

The no-second-round guidance means districts and career schools that want to compete for this fiscal-year funding should not wait for another application window later in the year.

How the program fits into the state budget

Pennsylvania’s enacted 2026-27 budget maintains $125 million for school infrastructure improvements. The governor’s budget announcement and DCED‘s deadline notice identify $100 million for the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program.

The broader school infrastructure funding also includes a separate Solar for Schools allocation. Separately, the House grant memo lists $200 million as total funding available in its program guidance. Because the documents describe different funding figures, applicants should rely on the applicable Commonwealth Financing Authority materials rather than treat the $100 million and $200 million amounts as interchangeable.

What this means for communities

If projects are approved, the grants could help schools address building conditions that affect students, educators and families, including heating and cooling, water and plumbing, roof problems, accessibility and other safety concerns.

No awards have been announced through this application window. The immediate decision for eligible school entities is whether to submit applications by August 7, not whether a particular project will ultimately receive state funding.

Districts and area career and technical schools seeking to participate should review the official Commonwealth Financing Authority and DCED application materials before the deadline.
