East Hanover Street sidewalk project begins ahead of Hanover school year

Construction is underway on East Hanover Street as Hanover Borough works toward completing selected curb and sidewalk repairs before the 2026-27 school year begins.

The project covers East Hanover Street between York Street and Baltimore Street in Hanover Borough, York County. The Borough reported construction underway on July 24, 2026. The work is funded through a York County Community Development Block Grant and is being carried out by Doug Lamb Construction Inc.

Selected sections targeted

The project does not rebuild the entire East Hanover Street sidewalk system. Because of funding limitations, the Borough selected the most severely cracked and damaged curb and sidewalk sections for replacement.

The work includes removing deteriorated sidewalks and curbs and installing new heavy-duty materials. The design also incorporates ADA-accessibility improvements as needed. Borough officials say the project is intended to improve pedestrian safety, particularly for children walking to and from school, and to direct stormwater toward the street and curb to reduce water pooling near adjacent properties.

Parking and traffic changes

Residents, pedestrians and motorists should expect temporary traffic-pattern changes and possible congestion while construction continues. The Borough encourages people to use alternate routes whenever possible.

Temporary parking is available in the Hanover Elementary School parking lot at 101 E. Hanover Street. The lot is accessible from Eagle Avenue.

Adjacent property owners and businesses were notified before construction began. A July 22 public meeting provided information about the project, possible property effects and temporary traffic disruptions in the area.

Cost and expected timeline

Hanover Borough Council’s July 22 meeting summary identified Doug Lamb Construction Inc. as the apparent low bidder at $242,711.80. The action was conditioned on satisfactory review and acceptance of supporting documents and forms by Borough staff and the Borough Solicitor, so the amount should not be described as an unconditional final award.

The Borough expects construction to be completed before students return in mid-August 2026. That is an expected completion target rather than a guaranteed final date.
