Dodgers Acquire Tarik Skubal From Tigers Before MLB Deadline
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired left-hander Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, August 1, adding the biggest prize of the 2026 MLB trade market to an already star-heavy roster.
Detroit received outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith, according to MLB’s transaction tracker. The deal gives the Dodgers another elite starter as they pursue a third consecutive World Series title and leaves the Tigers with three prospects in exchange for an ace who is eligible for free agency after the 2026 World Series.
What Los Angeles gets
Skubal is a two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner. He entered the trade with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings this season, according to The Associated Press.
The Dodgers were in first place in the National League West and were already viewed as a leading contender for another championship before the trade. If health, workload and roster decisions align, Skubal could join a potential rotation that includes Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. That is a possible configuration, not a settled postseason plan.
Skubal’s contract status adds a short-term element to the move. He can become a free agent after the World Series, meaning Los Angeles may have only the remainder of this season and the postseason to benefit from the acquisition unless the sides later agree to a new contract. His free-agency eligibility is not a prediction that he will leave the Dodgers.
What Detroit receives
The Tigers acquired three Los Angeles prospects: Hope, Ryan and Smith. MLB.com’s tracker identifies Hope as an outfielder and Ryan and Smith as right-handed pitchers.
Detroit entered the season intending to contend and had moved into the American League playoff conversation during June and July. But the Tigers were 2 1/2 games out of the final wild-card spot when the trade was made and had recently lost ground.
That position made the decision more complicated. Detroit was not simply dismantling a last-place club, but it also risked losing Skubal after the season without receiving a return. The prospects acquired from Los Angeles give the organization longer-term value while the Tigers decide whether to make additional moves before the deadline.
Why the deadline matters
MLB’s trade deadline is Monday, August 3, at 6 p.m. Eastern time. That is the final time during the season when players on major league contracts can be traded directly from one club to another. Players can still be placed on or claimed through outright waivers after the deadline.
For postseason eligibility, MLB says players must be on a team’s 40-man roster or 60-day injured list by noon ET on September 1, subject to limited exceptions. The timing leaves contenders with a short window to respond to the Dodgers’ move, whether by adding pitching, strengthening their lineups or making smaller roster adjustments.
What to watch next
The immediate questions are how quickly Skubal joins the Dodgers, whether his health and workload allow him to operate at full strength, and how Los Angeles arranges its rotation. Skubal had minimally invasive surgery on May 6 to remove a loose body from his pitching elbow and returned to pitch on June 13, according to AP.
Detroit’s next decisions will also shape the meaning of the trade. The Tigers could hold their remaining core and continue pursuing the wild card, or make further moves that prioritize the prospects and longer-term roster value they received for Skubal.
The central question is whether Los Angeles can turn a potentially short-term acquisition into postseason impact while Detroit converts its ace into a stronger future roster.
