Lutz intersection project advances with $3 million plan for US 41 and Sunset Lane
Hillsborough Countyโs current capital-improvement records show a roughly $3.04 million project at US 41 and Sunset Lane in Lutz moving through design, not construction.
Project 69679008 is planned to add turning capacity, rebuild the traffic signal and improve pedestrian access at the intersection. The county estimates design and land acquisition will be complete by early 2027, procurement by late 2027, construction could begin in late 2028 and construction could finish in mid-2030.
What the county plans to build
The project calls for dual westbound-to-southbound left-turn lanes from Sunset Lane onto US 41. It also includes reconstruction of the existing traffic signal.
For people walking or using mobility devices, the county plans to add or replace sidewalks and install ADA ramps, curbing and pavement markings. The project description identifies transportation mobility, pedestrian access and ADA compliance as objectives, but the reviewed records do not quantify expected changes in congestion, crashes or travel times.
Cost, schedule and funding
Hillsborough Countyโs project page lists the current total estimate at $3,038,355.70. The countyโs July 2026 fact sheet rounds that figure to $3,038,356, including $1,038,104 for design and land and $2,000,252 for construction.
The fact sheet identifies financing, ad valorem revenue and mobility fees for different phases. It estimates design and land-acquisition completion by early 2027, procurement completion by late 2027, construction beginning in late 2028 and construction completion by mid-2030.
Those dates and costs are estimates, not guarantees. The county says its capital-improvement cost and schedule data are current best estimates and subject to change as the project advances. The project page was current as of July 31, 2026, while the fact sheet carries a July 2026 data date.
A separate FDOT signal project
A Florida Department of Transportation work-program record separately lists project 439461-1 for preliminary engineering and right-of-way activities at US 41 and Lutz Lake Fern Road, Sunset Lane, Crystal Lake Road and Crenshaw Lake Road.
That state entry is related to signal work in the Lutz area but is not the same project as Hillsborough Countyโs 69679008 intersection improvement. The FDOT record confirms programmed engineering and right-of-way activities; it does not establish a construction date for the broader signal project.
What residents should expect now
Drivers, pedestrians and nearby businesses should not expect immediate construction, lane closures or traffic changes based on the records reviewed. The county has not published a current construction-impact schedule, lane-closure plan or property-acquisition list for project 69679008.
For nearby residents and businesses, the current practical effect is continued design and future planning around the intersection. If the project remains on the countyโs present schedule, construction could begin in late 2028 and finish in mid-2030. Future county updates will be needed as design, procurement and any right-of-way work move forward.
