Novato Council Contests Still Open With Aug. 7 Filing Deadline Four Days Away
Novato’s three City Council contests remain unsettled with the regular nomination deadline four days away on Aug. 7, 2026.
Voters will choose councilmembers in Districts 2, 4 and 5 during the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. The field may change before the regular deadline and, in some districts, through Aug. 12.
Three district seats are on the ballot
Novato uses a district-based City Council election system. Registered voters choose the councilmember representing their own district, rather than voting in a citywide council contest.
District 2 and District 4 are full four-year terms. District 5 is a two-year partial term, making it a shorter seat than the other two contests.
Current listing shows papers taken, but no filings
The Marin County Elections Department’s status page, checked for this report, lists people who had taken nomination papers for all three Novato contests. It showed zero filed papers in each contest at that time:
- District 2: Rachel Farac and Michael Little had taken papers.
- District 4: Daniel Christian and Pat Eklund had taken papers.
- District 5: Sandeep Karkal had taken papers.
Taking nomination papers does not mean a person has filed, qualified for the ballot or become an official candidate. The county says its city and town listings reflect paper activity and signature verification, but the county does not officially qualify city candidates. The status can also change as filings are processed, so final qualification should be confirmed with the Novato City Clerk.
Aug. 7 is the regular deadline
The city’s nomination period opened July 13, 2026, and closes at the regular deadline on Aug. 7, 2026.
If the incumbent in a particular district does not file by Aug. 7, the nomination period automatically extends in that district through Aug. 12, 2026, for non-incumbent candidates only. The extension does not automatically apply to all three Novato districts.
For voters, that means the people listed as having taken papers are not necessarily the people who will appear on the final ballot. The candidate field may continue to develop over the next several days, and a conditional extension could add non-incumbent candidates in an eligible district.
What Novato voters should check
Residents should first verify which council district they live in before reviewing the contest or the term at stake. The city provides an interactive district map and election information for residents who need to identify their district.
City Council candidates must reside in and be registered voters in the district they seek to represent when nomination papers are issued. They must also gather signatures from registered voters in that district and complete the required paperwork and other filing steps before the applicable nomination period closes.
The next key checkpoints are the Aug. 7 regular deadline, any district-specific Aug. 12 extension, and confirmation from the Novato City Clerk of which candidates have officially qualified.
