Brookhaven’s District 2 special election set for Nov. 3 after resignation
Brookhaven will hold a special election Tuesday, Nov. 3, to fill the unexpired District 2 council term after Jennifer Owens resigned.
Conor Sen is serving as the temporary District 2 council representative until voters choose someone to complete the term. The special election will be held alongside the general election. A runoff is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1, only if one is necessary.
Candidate qualifying is Aug. 17-19
People seeking the District 2 seat must file a notice of candidacy with the Brookhaven City Clerk at City Hall, 4001 Peachtree Road NE, from Monday, Aug. 17, through Wednesday, Aug. 19.
The city’s special-election notice lists qualifying hours as 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. A separate city notice specifies that the office will close for a midday break from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
The qualifying fee is $936. The city says that amount equals 3% of the preceding year’s total gross salary under Georgia election law. It is the filing fee required to qualify for the seat, not a broader estimate of campaign costs.
Qualifying is still upcoming as of Monday, Aug. 3. The city notices used for this report do not announce any qualified candidates.
Voter registration deadline is Oct. 5
Monday, Oct. 5, is the last day to register and remain eligible to vote in the municipal special election and any runoff, according to Brookhaven’s public notice.
Polls are scheduled to be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. If the District 2 contest requires a second election, the scheduled runoff date is Tuesday, Dec. 1.
What Sen’s appointment means
Sen’s appointment provides temporary representation for District 2 during the vacancy. It does not make him the elected successor. The special election will determine who serves the remainder of the unexpired term.
Residents and prospective candidates should confirm eligibility, qualifying requirements and final voting information with the City of Brookhaven and election authorities as the election approaches.
