VDOT project at Route 460 and Queen Street remains under construction in Prince George County

Drivers using U.S. 460 at Route 618, also known as Queen Street, should expect construction activity as the Virginia Department of Transportation continues an intersection improvement project in Prince George County.

The project will add an eastbound U.S. 460 left-turn lane for motorists heading south onto Queen Street. VDOT says the work is intended to improve traffic safety and intersection operations. The agency’s project page, last updated May 28, 2026, lists the status as under construction.

What is changing

The improvement is focused on the eastbound U.S. 460 approach to Route 618. The added turn lane is intended for traffic turning left onto southbound Queen Street.

VDOT identifies the project as UPC 115413, with state identification numbers 0460-074-796, C501, P101 and R201. The agency lists an estimated total project cost of $3.47 million and a listed construction cost of $1.7 million.

Traffic should remain open during work

VDOT’s maintenance-of-traffic plan calls for at least one lane to remain open in each direction throughout construction. The agency also says access will be maintained for local businesses and residences.

For drivers, the practical effect may include lane shifts, work-zone activity and slower movements near the intersection, particularly for eastbound motorists preparing to turn onto Queen Street. Drivers should follow posted signs and any temporary traffic directions at the site.

Timing references point to 2026

VDOT’s project page lists an estimated start in winter 2026 and estimated completion in summer 2026. A Prince George County Board of Supervisors meeting on Feb. 10, 2026, included a VDOT update indicating that construction was expected to begin in spring 2026.

Those references describe estimated or expected timing, not a guaranteed public opening date. A September 2025 county VDOT report identified Branscome as the contractor and listed Aug. 7, 2026, as a fixed completion date. Because that document is older, the date should be treated as a contract or project-control milestone unless VDOT separately confirms that the completed lane is open to traffic.

A May 2026 PlanRVA transportation-planning record lists UPC 115413 as a safety project at Route 460 and Queen Street in Prince George County and gives 2026 as the anticipated opening year. That planning reference also does not establish that the lane was open on Aug. 5, 2026.

What residents should watch

Motorists turning from eastbound U.S. 460 toward southbound Queen Street should allow additional time and watch for changing lane markings. Nearby businesses and residents should monitor posted work-zone directions because access routes may be affected temporarily even though VDOT says local access will be maintained.

As of Aug. 5, 2026, the latest cited VDOT project listing identifies the work as under construction. It does not confirm that the new lane is complete or open. Drivers can check VDOT’s 511 traffic service for current alerts and changes.
