Mecklenburg County opens 91-acre Ezell Park in Mint Hill

Mecklenburg County officially opened Ezell Park in Mint Hill on June 11, 2026, creating a new 91-acre public recreation facility at Matthews-Mint Hill Road and Mintwood Drive.

The park gives residents in the southeast portion of Mecklenburg County access to trails, athletic facilities, family-oriented amenities, parking and preserved natural areas. The opening also adds a new public destination within Mint Hill rather than in neighboring Matthews or Charlotte.

What the park includes

Ezell Park includes a nature-themed playground, trails and multiuse paths. Visitors can also use basketball and pickleball courts, a multiuse field, a sprayground, restrooms and parking.

The county preserved 32 acres of woodland and two ponds as part of the park. The site is in the Goose Creek watershed, and the county says the project was designed to protect ecological and wildlife resources while adding recreation opportunities.

An earlier Axios Charlotte report identified the project at 4101 Mintwood Road and described the planned splash pad as expected to operate seasonally beginning in May 2026. That was advance reporting from July 2025, not a statement of the park’s current seasonal operating schedule. The county’s opening release does not specify seasonal schedules for individual amenities.

A new county facility in Mint Hill

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and the Town of Mint Hill are among the entities associated with the new park. The county says Ezell Park addresses recreation gaps in the southeast part of Mecklenburg County, where the facility now combines active-use spaces with protected woodland and ponds.

For nearby families, athletes and other residents, the practical change is the availability of a county park with courts, a field, paths, playground equipment and a sprayground in one location. Parking and restrooms are also part of the facility.

The approved sources do not provide the project’s total cost, annual operating cost or projected attendance. They also do not establish that Ezell Park is the largest park in Mint Hill or that it resolves all local recreation or stormwater needs.

Ezell Park’s opening on June 11 marks the park’s transition from a planned development to an operating public facility. The county’s release does not identify another opening-related deadline or a separate schedule for future phases.
