YMCA selected to build Elmont community center; National Grid work also underway nearby
The YMCA of Long Island has been selected to design, build, operate and maintain a proposed community center at 570 Elmont Road, adjacent to Elmont Memorial High School, New York officials announced April 30, 2026. The project is tied to the Belmont Park redevelopment and is supported by a $2.5 million grant from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, or DASNY, for acquisition of the community-center site.
The center is intended to become a neighborhood resource for families, young people and seniors. The announcement establishes the YMCA’s selection and the project’s site and funding support, but it does not mean the center is open or already under construction.
What is known about the center
The proposed facility would convert vacant or underused property into a community resource near the high school. The YMCA of Long Island, rather than Nassau County or the school district, was selected for the project’s design, construction, operation and maintenance.
The reviewed records do not identify a final construction start date, completion date, facility size or operating schedule. They also do not establish a groundbreaking date. Those details remain unknown from the available announcement and project records.
National Grid work brings a nearer-term access issue
Separately, National Grid says construction is underway at its Marguerite Avenue Station facility at 43 Marguerite Ave., Elmont, NY 11003. The utility says work began in March 2026 and is scheduled to continue through spring 2027.
The project involves new infrastructure and an aesthetic perimeter fence around the station. National Grid says construction may affect Marguerite Avenue and Makofske Avenue, including parking. That could require residents, workers and nearby businesses to account for changing access and parking conditions around the station site while the work continues.
National Grid’s project information does not quantify expected traffic or parking disruptions. It also does not, by itself, establish that either avenue is closed or that the work has caused a major disruption. Residents and businesses should distinguish the stated possibility of effects from a confirmed closure or traffic restriction.
Two projects on different timelines
The community-center announcement points to a longer-term neighborhood investment, with the YMCA selected and funding identified for site acquisition. The National Grid upgrade is the more immediate project for people traveling to or parking near Marguerite and Makofske avenues, with work scheduled through spring 2027.
The next known timeline for the utility project is its planned continuation through spring 2027. No comparable construction or opening deadline for the proposed community center was provided in the reviewed records.
