Winneconne school district continues $28.3 million facilities program as middle-school work advances

The Winneconne Community School District is continuing a voter-approved $28.3 million facilities program focused on renovations and infrastructure upgrades at Winneconne Middle School.

District voters approved the referendum on April 4, 2023. The middle-school work was still ongoing as of Aug. 8, 2026, according to the district’s project update. The program is intended to address both student learning spaces and aging systems that support the building.

What the middle-school work includes

The project includes renovations to the school kitchen, commons and library. It also includes upgrades to heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, along with electrical and plumbing work.

Additional work covers the fire-alarm system and school bell system. The plan also lists improvements involving flooring, ceilings and doors, as well as accessibility work needed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

The district says the improvements are intended to strengthen the learning environment for students in grades 6 through 8 and extend the building’s useful life. That gives the referendum program two related purposes: improving the spaces students use and renewing the infrastructure needed to operate the school.

The $28.3 million authorization is for the facilities program approved by voters. The district’s public update does not identify a current construction-completion date, construction percentage or final cost-to-date.

Students examine future elementary needs

A separate report published June 29, 2026, described an independent study by three Winneconne students who designed a concept for a new elementary school.

The student project was tied to future district growth and what the report described as a community need. It represents an examination of a possible future facility, not a construction decision by the district.

The district has not announced that a new elementary school is approved, funded or scheduled for construction. The confirmed capital program remains the $28.3 million referendum authorization approved in 2023, centered on the middle-school improvements.

Together, the two efforts address different time horizons for Winneconne schools. The referendum work focuses on current middle-school facilities and systems serving grades 6 through 8. The student design study considers how the district might respond to future growth and elementary-school capacity needs. As of Aug. 8, the middle-school program remained ongoing, while the elementary-school concept remained an independent student study.
