Howard County plans pedestrian-safety construction on Cradlerock Way in Columbia

Howard County planned six raised intersections and one pedestrian refuge island on Cradlerock Way in Columbia, with construction scheduled to begin on or about July 27, 2026. The improvements are intended to slow traffic and give people walking a protected place to pause while crossing the roadway.

Residents, drivers and people biking along Cradlerock Way should expect changed roadway conditions as the county advances the work. Raised intersections elevate crossings at the roadway level, creating a traffic-calming feature while making crossing areas more visible. The refuge island is designed to separate a crossing into stages for people traveling across the road.

Maryland transportation-program records identify safety improvements involving Cradlerock Way and Broken Land Parkway for people walking, biking and driving. Local reports in early August 2026 said new pedestrian-refuge features had appeared on nearby Columbia roads and referred to the Cradlerock Way project. Those reports indicate that project features were visible by then, but they do not establish that all planned work was complete.

The next known step is continued construction of the planned raised intersections and refuge island. Howard County has not announced a completion date for the Cradlerock Way work.
