NASA’s Roman Space Telescope nears Aug. 30 launch target
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has reached SpaceX’s hangar at Kennedy Space Center in Florida as teams prepare for a final readiness review ahead of a planned Sunday, August 30, launch.
NASA reported that Roman arrived at Launch Complex 39A on Tuesday, August 25, inside the payload fairing that will protect the observatory during launch. The telescope is expected to be mated with a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in the hangar, followed by final fit checks and testing.
August 28 review is the next major checkpoint
NASA, Roman and SpaceX teams are scheduled to conduct a Launch Readiness Review on Friday, August 28. The review includes a final readiness poll, but it does not guarantee that the launch will proceed. Technical issues, weather or other launch-day conditions could still change the schedule.
NASA and SpaceX are targeting liftoff for no earlier than 7:26 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, August 30, from Launch Complex 39A. The launch date and time remain targets until the mission is cleared for flight.

Why Roman matters
Roman is designed for wide-field infrared surveys. Its field of view will be at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, allowing the observatory to survey broad areas of the sky and build large statistical samples. That makes Roman complementary to Hubble and Webb rather than a replacement for either telescope.
NASA’s planned science includes studying dark energy, which is associated with the universe’s accelerating expansion; mapping the effects of dark matter on galaxies and large-scale structure; examining how galaxies form and evolve; and discovering or characterizing exoplanets and planetary systems.
Those are mission objectives and expected capabilities, not results Roman has already produced. As of August 28, 2026, the telescope has not launched or begun science operations.
What happens after launch
If the launch occurs as planned, Roman will separate from its Falcon Heavy rocket and travel to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, commonly called L2, about one million miles from Earth. Arrival would be followed by spacecraft checkout and preparation for observations.
NASA describes Roman’s primary mission lifetime as five years, with a goal of operating for 10 years. Science data is expected to become publicly available after processing, but that work will come after launch, transit and commissioning.
