Rice launches Houston space-technology center with $14.1 million grant
Rice University announced Sept. 9, 2026, that it is launching a Houston-based Center for Space Technologies backed by up to $14,154,767 from the Texas Space Commission.
The center is intended to connect lunar research with technology transfer, workforce training and partnerships among universities, government and industry. Its immediate effects are expected to be research, equipment spending and education programs—not consumer products, household savings or other finished commercial results.
What the grant covers
The Texas Space Commission recorded the award on Feb. 17, 2026. Its grant ledger says the commission has awarded $150 million for 24 projects, with the initial state appropriation fully committed.
The Rice award is for up to $14,154,767. Commission records say the funding will reimburse eligible research, development, equipment and other direct project costs. The proposed grant-project termination date is Oct. 31, 2029; that is a project and funding date, not a deadline for commercial deployment.
The Center for Space Technologies will operate within the Rice Space Institute and focus on sustainable lunar exploration and in-situ resource development and utilization. Planned work includes technologies for using lunar or Martian materials, manufacturing concepts and systems designed for harsh space environments and long missions.
Rice has described the work as aligned with NASA’s Artemis-era goals for expanded lunar exploration. The available records do not establish a NASA contract or NASA endorsement of the new center.
How commercialization is supposed to work
Rice says the center will use a path from university research to technology transfer, innovation, industry partnerships and usable systems. The stated goal is to help move discoveries from laboratories toward possible commercial applications.
That pathway is not the same as a completed business outcome. The announcement and grant records do not document a commercial product, revenue, licensing result, deployment or verified job total produced by the new center.
The Rice Space Institute provides institutional context for that approach. Rice says the institute works with NASA Johnson Space Center, the U.S. Space Force and commercial space companies and maintains a research-to-use pipeline. Those relationships do not, by themselves, show that technologies from this new center have reached the market.
A statewide education and training network
The project includes workforce and education components beyond Rice’s Houston campus. Plans call for graduate certificates at Rice, space-workforce training through San Jacinto College and an astronaut camp at Texas A&M International University.
The Texas Space Commission identifies additional participating institutions including Prairie View A&M University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the Boys & Girls Club of Laredo.
The network is designed to connect advanced research with technical preparation and student programming across Texas. Its practical results will become clearer as institutions launch programs and report enrollment, research, training and partnership milestones.
