Video shows fire start in fatal-crash McLaren at Costa Mesa yard
Irvine police released surveillance footage Oct. 17 showing a fire begin in the front section of a McLaren wrecked in a fatal Irvine collision. The fire occurred Wednesday evening, Oct. 14, at a secured Costa Mesa tow facility contracted by the department to store collision vehicles. The McLaren was involved in a Sept. 13 collision that killed two people.
Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue investigatorsโ preliminary findings, supported by the video, indicate no one was present or interacting with the wreckage when it ignited. Irvine police released a sped-up section of the footage, with unrelated vehicles blurred. No injuries were reported in the tow-facility fire, according to a police spokesperson cited by City News Service.
Investigators had not established a definitive cause for the fire, a police spokesperson told City News Service. Irvine police said both the fire investigation and the investigation into the fatal collision remained ongoing.
