Trustees of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library voted to end traditional library operations at its Mastic Beach branch, News 12 reported Oct. 26. The libraryโs branch update schedules a temporary closure beginning Dec. 24, 2026, and a reopening for library-run programs on March 1, 2027.
The scheduled dates are 67 calendar days apart: seven days to Dec. 31, 31 days in January, 28 in February and one more day to March 1. That interval marks the planned closure, not a scheduled return to traditional branch service. The March reopening is for programs.
Programs instead of regular branch operations
News 12 described the branchโs intended new role as a community-focused space for classes and programs. The libraryโs schedule specifies library-run programs. For people who use the branch, the distinction is important: the temporary closure has a scheduled end date, but regular operations are not scheduled to resume then.
News 12 attributed safety concerns cited in connection with the decision to library officials, including vandalism, drug activity and violence. Those are officialsโ stated concerns, not a measure of safety across the wider community.
News 12 also reported that Mastic resident Kathleen Panessa expressed concern about crime. Shirley resident John DeStephano said he hoped the plans, community and people involved would work together.
Entry rules remain unsettled
A News 12 report from Oct. 22 said a library spokesperson had described a plan requiring people entering the programming center to have valid library cards. That report predates the trusteesโ vote and does not establish whether the requirement remained in the later plan. Current entry rules are unconfirmed.
