Frost Fest 2026 caps a big weekend for schools
Families and supporters of Oregon City Schools spent Saturday night at Frost Fest, the district foundation's Derby themed winter gala and fundraiser. The event is the Oregon Schools Foundation's signature fundraiser, with dinner, a silent auction and racing themed raffles to support classroom innovation grants and after school elementary art clubs. Organizers say money raised at Frost Fest helps keep extras like art enrichment and creative projects in local classrooms even as state funding remains tight.
The foundation notes that last year's Frost Fest generated tens of thousands of dollars for student programs, and they are aiming to match or exceed that success with the 2026 edition. Community members who could not attend are being encouraged to donate or sponsor later events as the foundation works to grow its endowment for long term support of Oregon students.
Coach training on mental performance coming to Clay
Looking ahead to Monday, coaches and school staff will gather at Clay High School for a Life and Leadership session focused on mental performance. The program is part of the Coach Beyond initiative run through Ohio State's LiFEsports program, which works with schools across Ohio to improve coach education and youth sports experiences. The February 9 session at Clay is scheduled for the afternoon and is aimed at helping coaches better support student athletes on and off the field.
The clinic emphasizes topics such as motivation, resilience and creating positive team cultures. While the session is designed for coaches, the broader goal is to strengthen the support system around young people in Oregon, connecting athletics more closely with social and emotional learning.
State kindergarten age change on local parents' radar
A new statewide kindergarten age law is also drawing attention from Oregon families. House Bill 114, which takes effect March 20, 2026, will require all Ohio school districts to admit children to kindergarten only if they turn five years old on or before the first instructional day of the school year. The change replaces the previous system that allowed districts to choose an August 1 or September 30 cutoff date.
For Oregon City Schools, that means parents planning for the 2026 to 2027 school year will need to look closely at the district's official first day of classes when deciding whether a child is old enough to enroll. Early entrance based on testing and acceleration policies will still be possible, but four year olds will no longer be able to start kindergarten simply because of a later local cutoff date. District officials are expected to update enrollment information and guidance as the effective date of the law approaches.
