Yonkers Awarded $10 Million for Downtown Revitalization Planning
Yonkers has been awarded $10 million through New York’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, but residents and businesses should not expect an immediate construction rollout or a finalized project list.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the award on July 8, 2026, naming Yonkers the Mid-Hudson recipient in New York’s ninth-round DRI program. The award creates a planning and project-selection process for a defined downtown revitalization area; it does not immediately assign the money to a completed construction package.
The award starts a planning process
Under the state’s DRI framework, Yonkers will develop a Strategic Investment Plan with municipal representatives, community leaders, other stakeholders, state agencies, and planning consultants. The plan is expected to identify local needs and opportunities, establish priorities, develop project proposals, and recommend projects for state review.
New York describes the DRI as a “plan-then-act” approach. In practical terms, Yonkers has secured the revitalization opportunity, while the specific uses of the $10 million still must be shaped through planning, public engagement, project selection, and subsequent approvals.
Waterfront access may remain a planning focus
Existing City of Yonkers DRI materials center on the downtown waterfront and describe potential concepts involving pedestrian connections, the Hudson River esplanade, streetscape improvements, and links between Point Street and the waterfront.
The materials also discuss possible waterfront amenities, including a marina, a public beach concept, and a dock-and-dine facility. Those ideas are presented as potential or proposed concepts with illustrative materials. They should not be read as approved work, guaranteed construction, or direct grants to particular businesses or property owners.
The downtown and waterfront boundaries shown in the city’s existing DRI materials can help guide the planning discussion, but they do not by themselves establish the final project list or guarantee that every proposed concept will be eligible for funding.
Who will shape the plan
A Local Planning Committee will help lead the local planning effort. According to the state DRI guidebook, the committee is expected to include municipal representatives, community leaders, and other stakeholders, working with state planners and a consultant team.
State guidance calls for public engagement during the process. Residents, business owners, community groups, and other affected stakeholders should have opportunities to comment on the downtown vision, proposed projects, and draft planning materials before recommendations are submitted for review.
What Yonkers residents should watch next
The next useful records will include announcements about the Local Planning Committee, meeting schedules, public workshops, project applications, draft Strategic Investment Plan materials, and city or state approvals.
The City of Yonkers Agenda Center is an official place to monitor future agendas, minutes, and related public records. The city’s DRI program page provides the existing boundary information and background on potential waterfront and streetscape concepts.
The bottom line is straightforward: Yonkers has secured a $10 million state-backed revitalization opportunity, with the downtown waterfront likely to remain part of the planning discussion based on existing city materials. The specific projects, timing, construction responsibilities, and implementation details still have to be determined.
