The Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Programme said on July 15 that acute food insecurity could worsen across 13 countries and territories through November 2026, calling for early humanitarian action.
The United Nations says 15.4 million people across the Sahel are expected to face acute food insecurity between June and August 2026, including more than 1.5 million in emergency conditions, as humanitarian agencies confront severe funding and access problems.
FAO and WFP said on July 9 that 9.1 million people in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger could face Crisis-level food insecurity or worse during the June-August 2026 lean season.
