Chicago Prepares for Nationwide Shutdown Amid Protests Against ICE

Chicago, IL — January 30, 2026 — Activists across Chicago and nationwide are participating in a nationwide shutdown today, protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s aggressive enforcement practices. The movement, known as the “national shutdown,” calls for no work, no school, and no shopping, aiming to create an economic blackout and support local protests against ICE.

This action follows recent fatal shootings involving ICE agents in Minneapolis and other cities, including the deaths of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Silverio Villegas González, and Keith Porter Jr. While the protest has garnered support from various student groups, immigrants’ rights advocates, and labor unions, there is limited evidence of widespread business closures in Chicago. Organizers emphasize targeting corporate entities rather than local businesses for the boycott.

This movement is distinct from “The General Strike,” a broader campaign rallying millions to halt work until numerous social justice demands are met. The nationwide shutdown is scheduled for today, January 30, 2026, with Chicago galleries among those participating. Many galleries, including moniquemeloche, Mariane Ibrahim, Corbett vs. Dempsey, and others, will be closed today in solidarity with the movement. The list of participating galleries may change, so it’s advisable to check with individual businesses for their status. Most plan to reopen on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The movement has also led to the cancellation of the Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls game, originally scheduled for January 8, 2026, and rescheduled to January 29, 2026. The game has been canceled as part of the nationwide shutdown.

As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and official channels.
