The Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education voted 8-1 on Oct. 28 to offer Allison Tingwall the superintendent job, making her the boardโs conditional choice to succeed Leadriane Roby. The offer depends on successful contract negotiations; the vote alone does not complete an appointment. School News Network reported that the special meeting lasted about four hours.
GRPS identifies Tingwall as Chicago Public Schoolsโ executive director of principal quality. In the districtโs announcement, she said she had spent 20 years with Chicago Public Schools. The two finalists were Tingwall and Kelly Greene, a GRPS chief area instructional leader.
School News Network reported that Trustee Kimberly Williams cast the lone dissenting vote and favored Greene, citing the importance of improving district culture. The vote records the boardโs decision, while Williamsโ stated preference gives one account of the alternative considered.
Robyโs departure date is set; Tingwallโs is not
GRPS says Roby will continue as superintendent through the end of the school year and lists June 30, 2027, as her final official workday. Has Tingwall started? School News Network reported on Oct. 29 that her start date had not been determined. The handoff therefore has a listed end date for Roby, but no confirmed start date for Tingwall.
For students, families and staff, the immediate development is a planned change in district leadership. The boardโs selection is not itself an announcement of changes to school programs or facilities.
Outreach shaped the candidate profile
GRPS says it used 20 focus groups, four in-person town halls, one virtual town hall and an online survey to gather input for the candidate profile. Those figures describe the districtโs outreach process, not a measure of community support for Tingwallโs selection.
In comments reported by School News Network, Tingwall referred to about 14,000 GRPS scholars. That gives a sense of the district she would lead if contract negotiations succeed and she begins the job.
