Cold Weather Shelter Opens Amid Freezing Temperatures

Vero Beach, FL — January 30, 2026 — A cold weather shelter has opened in Vero Beach as temperatures plummet, providing relief to residents during the ongoing cold snap.

The Salvation Army Vero Beach branch has been operating as a cold weather shelter since Wednesday, January 28, 2026, offering light meals and accommodations for the first 40 registered individuals. The shelter is located at 2655 5th Street S.W., north of Oslo Road and northwest of South County Park. Residents can register on-site or by calling The Salvation Army at 772-453-5383. The shelter will remain open through Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Overnight temperatures in Vero Beach have dipped to lows near 36 degrees, with wind chill values dropping to 30 degrees. A frost advisory is in effect for inland Indian River County, urging residents to protect plants and vulnerable populations.

Looking ahead, the cold snap is expected to intensify this weekend, with Saturday morning temperatures near 65 degrees, dropping to around 27 degrees at night. Sunday will see a high near 50 degrees, with nighttime temperatures falling to about 27 degrees or lower. Residents are advised to take protective actions for vulnerable populations, pets, and plants, and to exercise caution when operating indoor heating sources.
