Mahoning Avenue Project Sees Another Cost Drop

City officials approved another reduction to the long-running Mahoning Avenue improvement project this week, trimming hundreds of thousands of dollars from the final price tag. The adjustment reflects work items that ultimately weren’t needed, bringing the total cost well below the original bid.

The project, which stretches along a major West Side corridor, wrapped up months ago. City leaders say the savings mean federal and relief funding set aside for the work will fully cover the final cost.

County Commissioners Advance Contracts, Road Closure

Mahoning County commissioners approved a slate of routine contracts and change orders during their latest meeting, including actions tied to recycling services, housing repairs, and infrastructure maintenance.

Among the notable items was authorization for a temporary closure of Mahoning Avenue in Jackson Township beginning February 16. The 67-day closure will allow crews to install a large concrete culvert as part of an industrial corridor upgrade.

Community Calendar Busy Heading Into the Weekend

Friday brings a full slate of community activities across the Mahoning Valley, from fish fries and bingo nights to theater performances and local club dinners. Boardman, Columbiana, and surrounding communities are all hosting events, many open to the public.

Organizers encourage residents to check times and locations before heading out, especially with winter weather advisories in effect across the region.

Election Board Sets February Meeting

The Mahoning County Board of Elections announced a special public meeting scheduled for February 17. The board continues preparations for upcoming election cycles and administrative updates.
