Youngstown schools prepare for 2026 high-school consolidation
The Youngstown City School District is in the final preparation period for a major secondary-school reconfiguration that will change where many students attend school and how several city buildings are used beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
Under the district’s published plan, Chaney High School and East High School are being consolidated into a single Youngstown High School. Chaney Middle School and East Middle School also are being consolidated into one Youngstown Middle School.

Final work continues through August and September
Local reporting described August and September 2026 as the period for final first-day readiness, remaining adjustments and evaluations after the moves. That makes the next several weeks the final implementation window before the district begins operating under the new secondary-school arrangement.
The Vindicator reported that summer work would affect every district building except Woodrow Wilson School. The report did not provide a final student-enrollment allocation by building, so the district’s published plan and the available reporting do not establish how many students will be assigned to each facility.
The exact completion status of every construction and move-related task also remains unclear from the available sources. The consolidation should therefore be understood as an implementation in progress rather than a completed change.
East High work tied to the transition
East High School is undergoing capital and beautification work connected to its transition into the integrated Youngstown High School. Mahoning Matters reported that a major capital-improvement project was scheduled to begin as early as May.
On March 10, the school board approved an estimated $3 million beautification project at East High School, according to that report. The estimate applies to the East High work; it should not be treated as the total cost of the districtwide reconfiguration.
