City Council approves sales tax increase

Alabaster leaders voted this week to move forward with a one-cent sales tax increase following a public hearing. The added revenue is expected to support long-planned capital projects, including public safety upgrades and major community facilities.

City officials said the change is aimed at keeping pace with growth while funding improvements residents have repeatedly asked for. Local businesses will have a short transition period before the new rate takes effect.

School board seat now open

The city has also opened applications for Place 5 on the Alabaster Board of Education. The position offers residents a chance to help guide local school policy and long-term planning.

Applications are being accepted through the city’s official channels, with leaders encouraging qualified residents to consider applying. The appointment will help fill an upcoming vacancy and maintain continuity ahead of future school initiatives.

February meetings and programs

Several February dates are on the calendar for city boards and courts. A City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 9, with a work session earlier in the week. Zoning and municipal court sessions are also planned throughout the month.

Later in February, a defensive driving program offered in coordination with municipal services will give eligible drivers an opportunity to refresh skills and potentially address traffic-related matters.
