Seaside Morning Briefing for February 7, 2026

High surf and beach safety

Large winter surf continues along the Central Coast after the National Weather Service extended a high surf advisory into Saturday evening. Recent alerts warn of 14 to 22 foot breakers, strong rip currents and occasional sneaker waves capable of knocking people off rocks and jetties with little warning. Local officials are urging Seaside residents and visitors to stay well back from the waterline, avoid wet and unstable rocks, and keep an eye on children and pets near the shore.

City meetings and a community flea market

Looking ahead to next week, Seaside’s public meeting calendar is busy. The Seaside County Sanitation District and the city’s Environmental Committee meet on Tuesday, Feb. 10, followed by Planning Commission and Parks and Recreation Commission sessions later in the month. Additional meetings by the Traffic Advisory and Water Allocation committees and the City Council are scheduled through Feb. 19, giving residents several chances to weigh in on development, traffic and parks issues.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, the city’s Older Adults Program hosts a community flea market at Laguna Grande Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event offers a relaxed way to browse household items, books, toys and decor while supporting local neighbors and programs for seniors.

Schools highlight Black History Month

Across Seaside schools, February programming is centering on both Black History Month and career technical education. The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is using the month to spotlight the achievements and ongoing contributions of Black Americans, with classroom lessons and events at campuses including Seaside Middle and Seaside High. The district is also promoting hands on career pathways in areas such as health care, technology and the trades as part of its Career Technical Education Month campaign.

Seaside Middle School continues its Saturday Academy today, Feb. 7, with a morning session from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on campus. The optional weekend program gives students extra time to focus on schoolwork and enrichment in a smaller group setting, with additional Saturday Academy dates scheduled throughout February.

Otters rally in Seaside baseball opener

College baseball returned to the Otter Sports Complex on Thursday, Feb. 5, as Cal State Monterey Bay hosted Azusa Pacific in an early season matchup. The visitors jumped out to a 7–0 lead over the first two innings, but the Otters chipped away with a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and back to back three run frames in the seventh and eighth to secure a 10–7 comeback win. A three homer outburst by James Starkus powered much of the offense as the Otters bullpen held Azusa Pacific scoreless over the final seven innings.
