Dog-friendly history day set for Feb. 14

The city is leaning into Valentine’s season with “Puppy Love on the Porch,” a free, dog-friendly open house at the Crestview History Museum on Saturday, February 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Families are invited to bring well behaved, leashed dogs to explore the century-old Bush House, enjoy snacks, and meet volunteers who care for the museum. City animal services staff plan to have adoptable dogs on site for anyone considering adding a new pet to the family.

Officers and K-9 partners from the police department’s dog unit are also expected to stop by, giving residents a relaxed chance to learn more about how the teams work and say hello to the working dogs off duty.

Walmart Neighborhood Market officially under way

North Crestview’s long discussed Walmart Neighborhood Market project moved from plans to reality Thursday morning as city leaders and company representatives turned shovels of dirt at 1150 Industrial Drive.

The grocery-focused store is planned at roughly forty-five thousand square feet and will anchor a larger retail site with a fuel station and space for additional shops on about fourteen acres just northeast of the Richburg Lane and Industrial Drive intersection.

Local officials say the market should shorten shopping trips for residents on the north side of town and nearby communities such as Baker and Laurel Hill, while also bringing construction and long term retail jobs. Project leaders at the ceremony suggested an opening target in early fall if work stays on schedule.

Lane closures continue at Redstone and Brookmeade

Drivers who use Redstone Avenue near Brookmeade Drive should still plan for intermittent lane closures as a road project and new traffic signal installation move toward completion.

The city says work along the intersection is scheduled through February 12, with paving and striping occurring this week and the new signal currently operating in flashing mode before going fully active once all markings are down.

Motorists are being urged to slow down in the work zone, follow posted signs, and remember that a flashing red light should be treated as a full stop before proceeding when it is safe.
