Orchid show fills the community center

The Venice Area Orchid Society is opening its 59th Annual Orchid Show and Sale today at the Venice Community Center on Nokomis Avenue. Doors are open through late afternoon, with the show returning on Sunday.

Organizers are promising thousands of blooming plants, specialty vendors and free short classes for anyone who wants to learn more about growing orchids at home. With this year’s “Red, White and Bloom” theme tied to the nation’s 250th birthday and the city’s centennial, expect plenty of colorful displays and a busy crowd.

Quilts on the breeze at Maxine Barritt Park

Just down the road at Maxine Barritt Park, quilters from across Sarasota County are hanging their work for the annual Airing of the Quilts. The outdoor show runs late morning into early afternoon along the beachfront paths and gazebo.

The event features modern quilts, fabric sales, and a new boutique area with smaller handmade items. It’s an easy stop for a walk by the water, and a chance to see how local guilds are using the event to support charitable projects in the region.

Viva Venice! brings Latin flair to the symphony

At the Venice Performing Arts Center, the symphony continues its Viva Venice! program after last night’s performance. Today features a matinee and an evening concert, both built around Spanish and Latin American music.

The program mixes familiar orchestral showpieces with guitar features and film music, including selections that highlight the city’s connection to Hispanic culture and dance. With two shows on the schedule, residents have a choice between an afternoon outing and a night out.

Looking ahead: bikes and downtown evenings

Later this week, the city’s monthly community bicycle ride returns on Thursday morning, starting from City Hall. Riders of varied experience levels are welcome, as long as they bring a bike and helmet.
