City weighs new rules for short-term rentals

City staff spent Thursday evening listening to residents, rental operators, and neighbors at a public workshop on short-term rentals. The city is exploring whether to add caps, spacing limits, or other rules to manage the growing number of vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods.

Attendees on both sides emphasized protecting neighborhood character while keeping tourism dollars in town. Comments from the workshop will now be organized and presented to the City Council on February 24, with any formal policy changes still in the early discussion stage.

Downtown Huckleberry’s closes after construction impacts

A popular breakfast-and-lunch spot on El Camino Real has closed after a little more than two years in business. The restaurant’s leadership says extended road construction outside the entrance changed driving and dining habits, and that sales never fully recovered once the work wrapped up.

City representatives, while acknowledging construction challenges, say access to the parking lot remained open and that they have not seen a broader wave of closures tied to the project. The Atascadero location is now permanently shut, while the brand’s other Central Coast locations remain open.

Greyhounds sports week: home basketball and road soccer

Local high school teams are heading into a busy stretch. Atascadero girls basketball hosted Santa Ynez on Thursday night and will be back on the court Tuesday, February 10, with home games against Cabrillo.

The boys basketball team is also home that night, facing Arroyo Grande across freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels. Boys soccer is on the road next week, traveling to Templeton on Wednesday, February 11, for evening matches. Schedules can change quickly, so fans should double-check times with the school or league before heading out.

Valentine’s events and family fun

The Father & Daughter Sweetheart Dance continues through tonight, bringing families downtown for photos, treats, and music. Looking ahead, the weekly farmers market returns Wednesday, February 11, with fresh produce and local vendors.

Next Friday’s Sweetheart Stroll sip-and-shop event and the Woo at the Zoo celebration on Valentine’s Day round out a very busy week for date nights and family outings. Together with the city’s 2026 event calendar, it all adds up to a full slate of ways to stay connected close to home.
