Downtown plan enters final phase

The city’s long‑running effort to reshape the core of downtown has cleared a major hurdle. On January 26, the City Council approved the second reading of the Downtown Specific Plan, with the ordinance scheduled to take effect on February 25.

The plan sets a detailed blueprint for growth in the downtown area, emphasizing walkability, outdoor gathering spaces, and stronger connections to nearby neighborhoods. It also folds in the redesign of Harrington Park and the 700 block of Laurel Street, which together will form a central plaza space with new trees, seating, lighting, and a multipurpose pavilion.

As part of the redesign, ten existing trees in Harrington Park will be removed and replaced with new plantings intended to provide long‑term shade. Construction documents for the park are being finalized, and work is expected to begin this spring, while the construction schedule for the Laurel Street plaza will follow once funding and technical plans are in place.

Weekend in town: classes and game‑day fun

Today and tonight bring several options for getting out close to home. A Valentine‑themed breadmaking class at a local brewery offers hands‑on baking along with a social, food‑focused evening. During the day, a mixed‑media “funky flowers” art workshop starts a two‑day session that blends creative practice with reflection and goal‑setting.

This evening, a couples‑or‑singles paint‑and‑sip session at a Laurel Street wine bar leans into both football and Valentine’s Day themes, giving residents a lower‑key alternative to larger Super Bowl parties while still keeping the game in the mix.

Coming up: Wine Walk and community connections

Looking slightly ahead, tickets are on sale for the 2026 San Carlos Wine Walk on Friday, February 13. The event is set to return to Laurel Street and Harrington Park, with local businesses pouring regional wines as participants stroll between tasting stops. Proceeds support community programs and downtown activities, making it a popular pre‑Valentine’s outing.

For something quieter, the San Carlos Adult Community Center will host a “Making Friends in Your 60s and Beyond” gathering on Monday, February 9. The session is designed to help older adults build new social connections and learn about local resources in a relaxed, discussion‑based setting.
