Snow, wind and dangerous cold today

Garfield Heights woke up under multiple weather alerts as lake-effect snow and strong winds continue to move across Cuyahoga County. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early this morning, with additional light accumulations, blowing snow and reduced visibility on area roads.

Behind the snow, a Cold Weather Advisory is calling for wind chills well below zero through midday. Forecasters warn that frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as half an hour, and they urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers and check on neighbors who may need help staying warm.

Drivers are being asked to slow down, allow extra time on Interstates 77, 480 and nearby routes, and watch for rapidly changing conditions where heavier snow bands develop.

Chair yoga offers a warm indoor option

For anyone looking to get out of the house without braving a long walk in the snow, a free chair yoga session is scheduled today at the Garfield Park Program Center. The class adapts traditional yoga poses so they can be done seated or standing with the support of a chair, making it accessible for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Metroparks staff describe the program as a gentle way to improve flexibility and balance while enjoying views of the recently restored pond and trails at Garfield Park Reservation. Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably and arrive a few minutes early to get settled.

Looking ahead

City government is mostly quiet this weekend, but council is set to meet Monday evening at the Civic Center, according to the city calendar. Residents can expect regular city services to resume after the cold snap, with any schedule changes posted on the city’s website and social channels.
