Good morning, Parkersburg. As winter hangs on, a major historic rehab project, a busy home show, and a full slate of community events are keeping the city active this weekend.

Historic Civil War hospital gets a $1.2M rehab

Wood County crews are deep into a 40-week renovation of the 200-year-old former Civil War hospital on Avery Street, which sat vacant for about a decade.

The Wood County Development Authority is investing $1.2 million, backed by federal earmark dollars and local funds, to replace the roof, update mechanical systems, remediate asbestos and lead paint, and restore interior spaces while preserving the building’s character.

The building, originally the Henry Logan house built in 1843, served as a Union hospital during the Civil War and is believed to be the last remaining wartime hospital structure in the city and possibly the state. When work wraps up this fall, the development authority and Downtown PKB plan to move in, with two additional office suites available for lease.

Home show brings remodeling ideas to WVUP

The Great American Home Show continues today at the WVU Parkersburg campus on Campus Drive, giving homeowners a chance to meet local builders, window and door companies, and other contractors all under one roof.

Doors are open today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $5, with organizers planning to auction three window packages valued at about $5,000 each during Sunday’s program.

The show is pitched as a low-pressure way to collect ideas, compare estimates, and line up spring and summer projects while keeping business with Mid-Ohio Valley tradespeople.

Gardening, dining deals and family fun

The 11th annual Fridays in the Garden workshop series kicked off this week at South Parkersburg Baptist Church and will continue every Friday in February at noon. The free sessions, led by local Master Gardeners, welcome beginners and seasoned growers, with topics aimed at planning the coming season and small giveaways like seed packets and herbs.

Downtown Restaurant Week wraps up today after being extended because of winter weather, with 13 locally owned spots offering special menus and a last chance to enter drawings for gift baskets filled with gift cards and coupons.

Families looking to get out of the house have several options on today’s calendar, including free children’s art activities at the Parkersburg Art Center, hands-on woodworking classes at Woodcraft, and a sportsman expo later this afternoon at Fairlawn Baptist Church featuring vendors, a guest speaker and a wild-game dinner.

Roads may still be slushy in spots after this week’s snow, so allow extra time if you’re heading to events and check organizers’ pages for any last-minute schedule changes.
