Weekend on stage at The Eagle Theatre

Downtown Sugar Hill is in show mode this weekend as the Players Guild opens “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder” at The Eagle Theatre. The dark musical comedy follows Monty Navarro, a clerk who discovers he is ninth in line to a wealthy title and starts plotting his way up the family tree, all while juggling two complicated romances. Performances run through Sunday, February 8, with additional dates continuing next week, giving residents plenty of chances to see a full-scale production without leaving town.

Call for artists: Volunteer Art Showcase 2026

The Sugar Hill Arts Commission is inviting local artists to be part of this year’s Volunteer Art Showcase at the city’s art gallery. To have work displayed from April 30 through July 5, artists need to register as volunteers by March 15 and complete at least four volunteer hours supporting the gallery. After signing up for shifts, participants can submit pieces for approval and will receive details about how and when to install their work. The program is designed to highlight homegrown talent while also building a stronger corps of arts volunteers.

Lanier students push ahead with hunger relief campaign

At Lanier High School, band and football students are keeping the focus on service with an ongoing partnership with the nonprofit Meals to Missions. Their goal is to raise $160,000 by August 1 to fund and pack 10,000 shelf-stable meals for families in Sugar Hill and in eastern Kentucky, one of the nation’s poorest regions. The campaign includes local fundraising and high-energy packing events where students, families, and community members assemble meals together. Organizers say they hope the effort will keep youth engagement high long after the recent ice and weather disruptions.

Looking ahead on the city calendar

City Hall will stay busy in the coming days, with a regular council meeting set for Monday, February 9, followed by an Arts Commission meeting and a Development Authority session later in the week. Yard and leaf debris collection also continues on a rotating schedule, which can be helpful for residents cleaning up limbs and leaves after winter storms. Combined with shows at The Eagle Theatre and other downtown venues, the next stretch of February is shaping up to be an active one around the hill where the sugar spilled.
