Red Raiders coach hits 500-win milestone

Huntley’s girls basketball program reached a major moment Friday night as longtime head coach Steve Raethz recorded his 500th career victory. The Red Raiders rolled past Dundee-Crown at home, improving to 19-9 on the season and 13-2 in Fox Valley Conference play. The milestone caps more than 26 seasons on the Huntley bench and reflects the program’s long run of consistency and competitiveness.

Huntley spread the scoring around in the conference win, with multiple players finishing in double figures to keep the offense balanced. The lopsided final score also gave the team a chance to get more players on the floor in front of a home crowd, turning the milestone into a community celebration as much as a personal achievement for their coach.

Stage lights and student music fill the weekend

Today, the spotlight shifts from the basketball court to the stage. Huntley High School’s theatre department is in the middle of its run of “This Murder Was Staged,” with shows scheduled this afternoon and evening at both the campus auditorium and the district performing arts center. It’s one of the district’s bigger productions of the winter, drawing families from across the village.

Earlier in the day, Heineman Middle School is hosting a combined band, choir, and orchestra concert for sixth through eighth graders. The late-morning to early-afternoon performance gives younger students a chance to shine and offers parents a warm indoor option on a cold February Saturday.

School and library events keep families busy

Friday night also featured a “Dancing through the Decades” event at Mackeben Elementary, organized by the school’s PTA. The family night brought students, parents, and staff together for music and activities ahead of a busy weekend of district events.

At the Huntley Area Public Library, teen-focused programs continue through the weekend, including a monthlong photo challenge, a take-home craft kit, and gaming sessions in the library’s tech lab. Saturday programming invites middle and high school students to drop in, explore creative projects, and spend time with friends in a supervised space.

All of this comes after a week of true winter weather, with temperatures hovering near freezing and overnight lows dipping into the teens. Indoor games, performances, and library activities are likely to be especially welcome as residents look for ways to stay active without spending too much time in the cold.
